Two-year-olds Jumping Rope

by Fr. Jeff

She knew what jumping rope was. She understood what to do and how to do it: jump up and down over the rope, just like the big kids. In her mind, that’s exactly what she was doing. She was jumping rope.

Actually, she was trying to. Standing just two and a half feet high, the five-foot rope was obviously made for someone much bigger. Her hands held the rope high in the air and waved it about frantically. As she jumped up and down, her feet never left the ground.

She was the happiest kid alive.

Watching her there in the middle of the living room, we couldn’t help but laugh. It was so adorable, so innocent. It was one of those moments that reaches deep into the core of your being and makes you smile interiorly as much as exteriorly.

“The kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” -Matthew 19:14

As her dad and I watched in delight, we caught a glimpse of the Kingdom. The question arose: “I wonder if that’s how we play the game of life?”

At the Resurrection, we will understand the way God watches the world and our quest for the Kingdom. Tonight, You gave us a glimpse that the truth might surprise us and reach deep into our core once more.

You watch us just as we really are: two-year-olds jumping rope.
