Their hearts’ desire

by Fr. Jeff

I became attached to the Liturgy of the Hours while I was in high school. My dad had introduced me to the “prayer of the Church” when I was quite young, and I was always inspired by its beauty.

Tonight, while I was praying vespers, I found myself focusing on two lines:

May he give you your heart’s desire
and fulfill every one of your plans. -Psalm 20

As human persons, we are beings-in-relation. Our hearts long to be in a relationship with someone else, and our plans usually reflect that desire.

For this priest, my prayer tonight was from the psalmist. After all, that is what priests do: we pray that You may become

their hearts’ desire.
