Teach me to pray

by Fr. Jeff

“Fr. Jeff! I want to show you this!”

Every time I go to their house, he always has something to show me.

This evening was no different.

“I do Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer every day!” He handed me a worn volume of Christian Prayer. “It got wet, so the pages stick together. But I’m still learning.”

He held up the breviary. The pages were stuck together and difficult to turn. Looking down over the edge of the book, I could see his eyes intently following my hands as I set each ribbon in the correct place.

“Where did you get this?” I asked him.

“It was Mr. Jimmy’s.”

He paused for a few seconds.

“Do you think we could do evening prayer before you leave?”

At that moment, my mind returned to You:

And when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray.” -Luke 11:1

The whole family gathered around the table. With two smartphones and a waterlogged breviary, the six of us prayed Vespers.

“You really do this five times a day?”

I saw the excitement in his eyes.

“I sure do.”

Of all the requests from the disciples, I imagine this one held a special place in Your heart. After all, it summed Your entire mission.

Today, You shared a glimpse of that joy with me. An innocent request revealed the depth of Your joy:

Teach me to pray.
