Really live

by Fr. Jeff

“Hospice called. A priest is needed at the Veteran’s home.”

It’s one of the most moving moments in a priest’s life. Preparing people for death is what we do.

I knocked on his door. There was no answer. I knew his condition from our many encounters over the last few weeks, so I went in anyway.

There he was, curled up in his bed. He raised his head to see who I was, then he laid back down calmly. He couldn’t speak, but he closed his eyes and listened intently.

I simply did what priests do.

As I put my oils away, I stood next to his bed and talked to You. There I was, preparing this man for death.

Then You corrected me:

You are not preparing him to die. You are preparing him to

really live.
