Never pretend

by Fr. Jeff

On the first Sunday of Lent, You ask us to reflect on Your temptation in the desert. The devil tried to trick You like he tried to trick them in the Garden.

Today, our bishop asked us to reflect on these temptations:

The devil at first seems not to know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.  The tempter addresses Jesus with these words, not once but twice, “If you are the Son of God…” (Matthew 4:3, 6).  Is the devil pretending?   Certainly pretending is a common ploy of the devil, yet his knowledge and power are not unlimited. -Bishop Glen John Provost, Lenten Pastoral Letter 2014.

Perhaps that’s one of his most dangerous tricks: tricking us to pretend that You aren’t You.

In this season of grace, help me to avoid that wile of the devil. Give me the grace to

never pretend.
